Are bean bags suitable for outdoor use?

Not all bean bags are. A standard indoor bean bag left outside will absorb moisture, fade in the sun and deteriorate quickly; often within a single season. The difference between an indoor bean bag and a genuine outdoor bean bag isn't just marketing language. It's the fabric, and the fabric is everything.

All of our outdoor bean bags are made from Olefin - a solution-dyed synthetic fabric specifically engineered for outdoor exposure. The colour is locked into the fibre during manufacturing rather than applied to the surface, which gives it significantly better fade resistance than standard outdoor fabrics. It's also water-resistant and handles pool splash, rain and humidity without absorbing moisture the way other fabrics do.

What about mould - can it happen on outdoor bean bags?

This is worth being honest about. Olefin fabric is mould and mildew resistant, and that resistance is genuine, not just a marketing claim. The fabric doesn't absorb moisture the way natural fibres do, which means it doesn't create the damp environment that mould needs to take hold.

However, mould is an environmental condition rather than a fabric failure. In the right conditions, prolonged dampness, poor airflow, a bean bag stored away without fully drying first - mould can form on any outdoor fabric, including Olefin or even Sunbrella. It's not common with proper care, but it can happen.

How to get the most out of your outdoor bean bag

Olefin is a genuinely tough fabric but a few simple habits extend its life considerably and keep it looking good season after season.

Let it dry fully after rain or pool use. Water doesn't penetrate Olefin easily, but moisture can pool underneath the bean bag if it's left sitting on a wet surface. Make sure airflow can get underneath it, or prop it up to dry after heavy rain or a pool session.

Rinse after pool use. Chlorine and salt water are fine for Olefin in normal use - left to accumulate without rinsing, they can gradually degrade even durable fabric over time. A quick hose-down after pool use is all it takes.

Store undercover when not in use. Bringing your bean bag under a patio, verandah or into a shed during extended periods of non-use - or during the cooler months, adds significantly to its lifespan. Full-time outdoor exposure is fine, but a little shelter goes a long way.

Always dry fully before storing. The most common cause of mould on outdoor bean bags is storing a damp piece in a low-airflow space. Make sure the cover and filling are completely dry before packing anything away for the season.

Wash the cover regularly. All our outdoor covers are removable and machine washable. A wash at the start and end of summer keeps the cover fresh and removes any build-up of sunscreen, dust or residue before it has a chance to cause issues.
