The Bean Bag Lounger: How to choose the one your space actually needs

A great bean bag lounger changes how you use a room. Whether it's the piece the whole family fights over on movie night, the poolside seat that makes your backyard feel like a resort, or the reading corner you've been meaning to create for years - there's a lounger for that. Here's how to find yours.

Bean Bag Loungers: How to find the right one for your space

A great bean bag lounger changes how you use a room. Not just the furniture in it - the room itself. The way people move through it, how long they stay, where they end up at the end of the day. It's the piece the whole family quietly argues over, the one that gets dragged from room to room because nobody can agree on whose it is.

At Mooi Living we make bean bag loungers for every environment - indoor living rooms and media rooms, outdoor pool decks and entertaining areas, and everything in between. This is your guide to understanding the difference, finding the right fit and making a choice you'll still love five years from now.

What Makes a Bean Bag a Lounger?

It's a fair question because the line between a bean bag chair and a bean bag lounger can feel blurry. Here's the distinction that actually matters:

A bean bag chair is designed for sitting - it supports you upright, gives your back something to rest against, and works like a very comfortable alternative to a standard seat. A bean bag lounger is designed for everything beyond sitting. Longer in profile, lower to the ground, built to accommodate the full length of your body. Reading. Napping. Watching a film with your legs stretched out and not a care in the world. Floating on a pool.

The lounger is the piece you sink into rather than sit on. And once you've had one, a chair just doesn't quite cut it for genuine relaxation.

Indoor bean bag loungers - The piece your living room is missing

There's a particular kind of comfort that traditional living room furniture struggles to deliver. Sofas are great for sitting. Armchairs are great for reading. But neither quite nails the full-length sprawl that a proper lounger makes possible - the kind where your whole body is supported and you genuinely don't want to move.

Our indoor bean bag loungers are built in premium fabrics designed specifically for indoor living - soft, breathable and beautiful in a way that outdoor-focused fabrics rarely are.

The Double Boss Bean Bag Lounger - The family favourite

The Double Boss is our most popular indoor lounger, and it's not hard to see why. Oversized and generously proportioned, it comfortably seats two adults - or gives one person the kind of sprawling space that makes everything else feel like a compromise.

Available in our premium cotton canvas, the Double Boss brings a relaxed, organic aesthetic that slots into coastal, minimalist, and contemporary interiors without trying too hard. The cotton canvas version in particular ages beautifully - the natural fibres soften with use, breathe better than synthetic fabrics and have a matte, understated texture that interior designers tend to gravitate toward.

The covers are removable and machine washable, which matters more than it might sound for a piece that's going to be used daily by a family who aren't always careful. It pairs beautifully with the single Boss and matching ottoman if you're building a full media room or living room setup.

The Mooi Double Cord Lounger - For the space that wants texture

If the Double Boss is the clean, understated choice, the Mooi Double Cord Lounger is its more tactile, characterful counterpart. Made from a premium corduroy blend with that distinctive ribbed texture, it adds warmth and depth to a room in a way that flat-weave fabrics simply don't.

Available in Caramel, Beige and Olive Green - all of which are exactly the kind of tones that work across the warm, natural palettes that dominate contemporary interiors right now. The Caramel in particular has become one of those pieces that appears in customer photos more than almost anything else in our range. It photographs exceptionally well, which is partly why.

Like the Double Boss, it's a double seater that works just as well as a single-person sprawl. The corduroy fabric requires indoor use only - keep it out of direct sunlight to preserve the colour and texture - but for a living room, media room or bedroom reading corner, it's genuinely hard to beat. It pairs with the Mooi Cord Chair and Mini Cord Chair if you want a cohesive corduroy setup across a space.

Which Indoor Lounger Is right for you?

If you want something that feels effortless and works across a wide range of interior styles - the Double Boss in cotton canvas. If you want something with more personality and tactile richness, something that becomes a design feature as much as a functional piece - the Mooi Double Cord.

Both come with removable, washable covers. Both are double seaters. Both are the kind of piece the whole household will claim as their own within about forty-eight hours of it arriving.

Outdoor Bean Bag Loungers - Resort comfort in your own backyard

The outdoor bean bag lounger has quietly replaced the traditional sun lounger for a very simple reason: it's more comfortable, more versatile and looks better in the space. The rigid aluminium frame, the cushion that slides off when you shift position, the general sense that you're using furniture designed for a budget hotel - none of that applies here.

Our outdoor bean bag loungers are built from Olefin - a premium synthetic fabric that is solution-dyed, meaning colour is locked into the fibre at the manufacturing stage rather than applied to the surface. The result is a piece that handles sun, rain, pool splash, and heavy use minimal fading or breaking down. If you want to understand exactly why Olefin is such a standout material for outdoor furniture, our full Olefin explainer covers it in detail.

The Lachlan Sunlounger - The design statement

The Lachlan is our most architectural outdoor piece. Its elongated profile and clean silhouette make it the right choice when the lounger itself is part of the design statement, not just furniture filling a space. It works beautifully in pairs flanking a pool, or as a solo piece in a smaller outdoor area where you want one thing done properly.

The Lachlan also transitions inside without looking out of place - on cooler evenings or during the off-season, it's a piece that earns its keep year-round rather than spending months in a shed.

The Cojelo Suave - The All-Rounder

The Cojelo Suave has a slightly more upright profile - still a lounger, but with a back angle that suits reading and conversation as well as full horizontal relaxation. If you're buying one piece for a deck or patio that has to do multiple jobs across the day, this is the one. It's also the piece our resort and commercial clients specify most often - from tropical Queensland properties to venues in Singapore and Fiji - which says something meaningful about how it performs under daily use.

The Chill UV Lounger - The Pool Deck Double

The Chill UV is our outdoor double seater - Grade 8 UV protection, mould-resistant, water-resistant and sized generously for two adults who each want their own space. For an exposed pool deck with no overhead shade, this is the piece built for it. It's also consistently the choice for Airbnb hosts and holiday rental properties worldwide - it photographs beautifully and creates exactly the kind of poolside moment that earns five-star reviews.

Poolside and In-Pool Loungers - The full water experience

If your outdoor space includes a pool and you want the lounger experience to extend into the water, our dedicated pool float range takes things a step further. The Lana Lounger, Santorini, and Talia are all designed to work both in and out of the water - built with drainage systems that handle pool use properly and Olefin fabric that handles chlorine and salt water without degrading.

Choosing the right lounger - A simple framework

With indoor, outdoor, and poolside options across single and double seaters, different fabrics and colourways, it can feel like a lot of decisions. Here's a simple way to think through it:

Where will it live most of the time? Indoors, go cotton canvas or corduroy. Outdoors or poolside, go Olefin. This single decision narrows the field significantly.

How many people need to fit? If it's primarily one person's piece, a single seater works beautifully. If it's going in a shared living space or family area, a double seater is almost always the better investment - you'll use all of it.

What does the space already look like? Warm neutrals and natural textures lean toward the Double Boss in Natural or the Mooi Cord in Caramel. Cooler, more contemporary spaces suit the cleaner colourways. Outdoor spaces with strong architectural lines tend to suit the Lachlan. More relaxed, tropical outdoor spaces suit the Cojelo or Chill UV.

How much do you care about colour? Our stripe colourways - across the Chill UV, Bora Bora, and Lachlan outdoor ranges - add movement and visual interest to a space that might otherwise read as flat. Our solid colourways sit quietly within an existing palette. Neither is wrong - it depends entirely on whether you want the lounger to be the focal point or a considered supporting piece.

Styling your lounger - A few principles worth knowing

Pair with an ottoman. Our Indoor Ottomans and Outdoor Ottoman serve as footrests or low side tables - they ground the lounger visually and add genuine practical value. It's one of those additions that seems optional until you have it.

Give it room to breathe. A bean bag lounger pushed flat against a wall loses what makes it special. It needs space to be approached from any angle, repositioned freely, claimed and reclaimed by whoever wants it that day. This is furniture that invites interaction - give it the space to do that.

Don't treat it as the last decision. The lounger is often the largest, most dominant piece in the space. Let it anchor the room rather than filling a gap left by everything else.
