Preventing your Bean Bags from Going Flat
At Mooi Living, we ensure that our bean bags are durable enough to last for many years, especially if they are well taken care of.
However, due to the nature of bean filling, overtime, they will eventually flatten.
We've got some great tips on how to extend the "fluffi-ness" of your bean filling ... so here goes:
Have you heard of the “flip and fluff” method? This is an effective way to restore the shape of EPS beads. This method will help restore the beauty and comfort of your bean bag.
But, why is it necessary to do the "flip and fluff" method? That is what we will answer and discuss in this article.
Expanded Polystyrene Beans (EPS) - What is it and Why is it Often Used in Bean Bags?EPS is a type of bead similar to Styrofoam, which is extruded polystyrene. It has air pockets which makes it light and comfy to seat - and this is why EPS is the most preferred filling by many people for their bean bags.
However, it's unavoidable that EPS beans will flatten especially if you sit on your bean bag often and for a long period of time, and as time goes on, the air pockets from EPS get emptied. When this happens, your bean bag will go out of shape and it will not be as comfortable.
Here are 3 easy and simple steps of the “flip and fluff” method:- Open your childproof bean bag zipper with a paperclip. We suggest doing this in a room where there are no children or pets to avoid injury because if they inhale the beans, there can be a risk of suffocation.
- Now, you can start doing the “flip and fluff” method. Once you've opened the bean bag cover or inner bag, hold its opening so it's positioned upwards, and then shake it for 5 minutes. This process helps the beads regain the lost air and return to their original shape.
- After doing Step 2, you may close the zipper of your bean bag cover or put the filled inner bag into the bean bag cover and close the zipper, and then check if your bean bag is no longer flat. You can also sit on it to test its comfort. If it still feels flat and uncomfortable, just repeat Steps 1 and 2.
Note: If your bean bag still looks flat and hasn't returned to its original shape even after doing the “flip and fluff” method twice, then it's time to replace the filling. You can read our article How to Fill Bean Bags if you need help doing this.
ConclusionWe recommend doing the “flip and fluff” method every 3 months even if your bean bag still looks great to prevent your bean bag from flattening and to maintain its good shape and comfortability.
Also, note that EPS beads do not last a lifetime. Usually, it only lasts for a few years even if the “flip and fluff” method is done regularly. If it ever gets to the point that this process is no longer working, that means your bean bag's filling needs to be replaced.
